It seems to me that as individuals we all seem to attach regret to circumstances which seemed not to 'work out' in our own favor, or desire. But there is sure to be, at least one individual, or many others which are equally effected by the outcome of such circumstances, which are likely to prefer the results just the way they turned out.
With such a perception in mind it would be easy to conceive a balance between loss and gain, simply be refining desire, and redefining 'loss'.
